Statement on Generative AI
I never use generative AI in any of my work. There are multiple reasons I do not believe it is ethical at this point.
- Environmental. At the very least, the environmental, energy, and water impact massive data centers have is hard to justify. I try to turn the light off when I am not using it and every generative AI inquiry is the equivalent of leaving the lights on all night.
- Copyright. There are huge concerns with training data and copyright. Generative AI frequently cuts enough out of a different piece to violate copyright. It usually gets away with it because it is hard to track down.
- AI Bias and diversity. I am actively trying to be more inclusive. Generative AI does not try to be more inclusive and instead will continue to cement unfriendly trends since it only mimics trends that already exist.
- Quality. Last but not least, the quality of these quick images is usually garbage. The lighting is often flat or completely wrong and body parts are usually disproportionate to each other.
